Autism, Crime & Public Safety

People with autism spectrum disorder might have certain characteristics that could make them to break the law, controlling the aggression, emotion and understanding other people’s perspective. They may face trouble as this challenging behavior can attract the attention of the police. Despite the people’s interest that people with autism as criminals, they are more likely to be victims. Children with autism are bullied, abused or neglected by the non-disabled children. Researchers found that violent criminals with high functioning autism having deficits in moral understanding, emotional control and understanding others perspectives. Also there are severe disadvantages for the people with autism disorder that they are lacing social interaction skills and for this reason when questioned by police, they are not able to tell whether the investigator is lying or trying to manipulate them. As a result they come under false confession or fail to protect the legal rights.
